Eligible Specialties:
|
Scientists, researchers, physicians, and other health professionals holding an M.D., Ph.D., Psy.D., Pharm. D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution. D.V.M. is appropriate for all LRPs except the Clinical Research LRP or Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds LRP.

Service Requirements (formerly Service Stipulation):

NIH offers five extramural LRPs (where research is done outside of NIH at any non-profit institution); each requires a two-year commitment to conduct at least part-time research (minimum 20 hours per week average) in one of the following areas:
Clinical Research,
Pediatrics Research,
Health Disparities Research,
Contraception and Infertility Research,
Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds
NIH offers three intramural LRPs (for NIH employees doing research at NIH); each requires a two- or three-year service commitment, as shown:
General Research (3 years),
AIDS Research (2 years),
Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds (2 years)

Who Can Apply:
|
U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent; see Eligible Specialties section above) and educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of annual salary. An NIH grant is not required for participation in the NIH Loan Repayment Programs.

Each LRP repays up to $35,000 per year, plus related taxes.
