Medical Student Loan Forgiveness Program

For needy medical students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment at the Marshall University School of Medicine, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine or the West Virginia University School of Medicine.

Loan forgiveness may be granted at the rate of $10,000 for each period of 12 consecutive calendar months of full-time practice commencing on or after July 1, 2008 in an approved designated medically underserved area of West Virginia or in an approved designated medical specialty in which there is a shortage of physicians. Otherwise, repayment of loan (principal and interest) will be required over a 10 year repayment period.

Must attend any West Virginia medical schools in program leading to an MD or DO.

Repayment will begin one year following the date that the borrower ceases to be a full-time student with a maximum of 10 years to repay the loan (principal and interest). The minimum repayment amount shall be no less than $50.00 per month. See loan forgiveness option under section, Service Requirements.

The maximum annual loan amount is $10,000.

Applications are available from the institutional financial aid office of participating schools of medicine and such office is responsible for determining eligibility and notifying students of the action taken.
